2010 Summer Program
Future Cougars – Final Summer 2010 Update from Steve Newes
To all Future Cougars Summer 2010 players and parents……..As we have now
completed the 2010 Future Cougars summer lacrosse program, we conclude
with final comments and thanks.
First….thanks to all of the players. In the tournaments, you
represented Chatham with class and tremendous effort. You
honored the game with your sportsmanship and commitment to getting a
little bit better every day. Your camaraderie and caring for one
another is far more important than the record of wins vs. losses.
Friendships and team spirit commencing at the earliest stages of
competitive play are the roots for later success when you combine that
with hard work and dedication to improving your skills.
Learning how to deal with tough losses will help you greatly in the
quest for success as you grow older. Winning via
playing a game the correct way and having respect for your opponents
will prepare you for future success while maintaining your humility.
Probably the greatest coach in any sport (John Wooden) once said: ”The
main ingredient of stardom is the rest of the team”. You are
all-stars for Chatham.
Second…..thanks to all the parents for your support.
This year represented the fourth year of a summer lacrosse program in
Chatham, which started in 2007 with open field night on Sundays.
This year, we fielded five teams in two tournaments and four teams at
the final tournament. Very few towns in New Jersey can
make this claim. In fact, we have been contacted by a
bunch of towns who asked how we did it, because they all want to do the
same thing. Our goals for summer lacrosse in Chatham remain
the same as originally advertised……..keep the boys together throughout
their youth and High School careers……..provide top-quality
coaching……provide a program cost that is significantly less than
alternative summer club programs..…..and keep it all close to home.
Third……thanks to our High School head coach; Tony Calandra and his staff
of HS assistants and Chatham alumni who worked hard to make this summer
a big success. The planning for this program began in August
’09. The long term goal is that your sons (during and
after their college careers) will come back to Chatham and become a
paid, summer assistant coach commencing in years 2015 – 2019.
Finally…..the summer program has been a labor of love for many of us
involved with running Chatham boys-youth lacrosse.
Coach Calandra and the Cougar Lacrosse Club Board of Trustees are
dedicated to improving the program annually. The
planning for Fall 2010 clinics, Winter 2010/2011 clinics-games, and
Summer 2011 has already begun. Information will be available by
the end of August via the website;
www.chathamlacrosse.org.
We welcome feedback and constructive criticism. We are in
this to serve the community and specifically the kids. It’s
all about TEAM. It’s all about CHATHAM. We extend our
wishes to you and your families for a great remainder of the summer.
GO COUGARS!
